Ultima Linux 8.2 (codename “Godot” – released July 8, 2007; re-released July 23, 2007) is our twelfth release since November 2004. It was originally intended to be released as Ultima Linux 8.1, but due to extensive development delays the latter was canceled after one stable and one unstable beta release. Among other things, 8.2 will be the first non-beta release with full AMD64 processor support. The x86 version will also be considerably updated, with all new packages built for i586 (Pentium) architectures rather than the traditional i486.
Ultima Linux 8.2 includes the Linux kernel 2.6.21.3; an updated toolchain featuring GCC 4.1.2, glibc 2.5, and binutils 2.17.5; X.org R7.2 with ATI/NVIDIA proprietary drivers; Firefox 2.0.0.4 with Flash, Java, and MPlayer plug-ins; Thunderbird 2.0.0.0; OpenOffice.org 2.2.0; and many more significant updates.
Because of the large number of new packages, 8.2 is the first version of Ultima Linux to include a third installation disc. There should be approximately 11 discs when the release is finished:
- 3 installation discs (AMD64)
- 3 installation discs (x86)
- 3 source discs
- 1 AMD64 LiveCD (desktop*)
- 1 x86 LiveCD (desktop*)
* A server LiveCD was planned but will be delayed due to last-minute technical difficulties. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Features
The base system for 8.2 is now Slamd64 rather than Slackware proper due to the need for simultaneous 64- and 32-bit support. AMD64 support will be greatly expanded in the 8.2 release, including improved 32-bit development and application support.
8.2 will be the first stable release to include automounting support via HAL and D-Bus (these features were first released in the unstable 20070415 release). It is also highly likely to be the first release which uses the LiveCD installer rather than the classic Slackware setup scripts for system installation, and to switch from the LILO to the GRUB bootloader. It will also contain a further updated artwork package and various other visual improvements.
This release also features greatly improved multimedia support, including the latest Flash and MPlayer plug-ins for Firefox, as well as better support for sound in OpenOffice.org. It also adds in an easy-to-use video DVD burning application, DeVeDe, so you can burn any video on your computer to disc and play it in your home DVD player.
slapt-get and its GSlapt front-end have been added to make installing new packages easier – by default it comes pre-configured to download new Ultima Linux packages (once we have our repository set up), as well as third-party packages from the popular LinuxPackages.net.
LiveCD
- Main article: LiveCD
The LiveCD is now available in Desktop and Server editions. Note that in order to maintain a reasonable disc size, some files (including development headers) may have been removed and will need to be reinstalled separately if needed.

Important updates
AMD64 Edition
- cxxlibs: If you're receiving errors about libstdc++.so.6 in Konqueror or other KDE apps on the LiveCD, run
ulupdate --livecd. This is a minor bugfix which was not noticed until after the CD’s were assembled. This does not affect the x86 Edition of Ultima Linux or the July 23 re-release.
Bugs
- i586 support: Support for i586 (Pentium) processors appears to be broken in Ultima Linux 8.2. Pentium II and newer processors, as well as AMD equivalents, are not affected. This is considered extremely low priority and no fix is currently planned.
- Slackware installer: The Slackware installer may be slightly broken. This should not affect most users (the LiveCD installer is the recommended way to install 8.2 and newer releases). If you need the Slackware installer try running
mount /dev/hdc /cdrom ; installpkg /cdrom/slackware/a/pkgtool*.tgz
(substitute hdc for your CD-ROM drive).
Re-release
Due to a large number of problems with video card detection, particularly with NVIDIA graphics adapters, Ultima Linux 8.2a was released on July 23, 2007. This previously unplanned re-release includes an alternate version of the NVIDIA proprietary display driver, and two LiveCD cheatcodes to better handle video configuration. The re-release is otherwise identical to the original Ultima 8.2.
About the name
This release was codenamed “Godot,” after the absurdist play Waiting for Godot, due to the long delay between releases. The play centers around the two main characters' wait for the title character of Godot, who is claimed to be coming "the next day" but in fact never arrives.
