LiveCD installation instructions

This is an easy guide to installing Ultima Linux from the LiveCD/LiveDVD using the Wolvix Control Panel.

First and foremost: Back up any important data that you don't want to lose.

Start the LiveCD and follow the prompts on your screen. Log in once you reach the login prompt.

Click the "Install to Hard Disk" icon on your desktop:

Answer "Yes" at the prompt below:

Now you will see something like this screen:

Error creating thumbnail: convert: unable to open image `/var/www/htdocs/mediawiki-1.11.2/images/7/7e/WCP-04.png': No such file or directory.
convert: unable to open file `/var/www/htdocs/mediawiki-1.11.2/images/7/7e/WCP-04.png'.
convert: missing an image filename `/var/www/htdocs/mediawiki-1.11.2/images/thumb/7/7e/WCP-04.png/512px-WCP-04.png'.

All you really have to do is follow the instructions shown and you'll be just fine. If you need to partition your disk click the "Run qtparted" button, which will bring up an easy-to-use graphical partition manager. Recommend partition sizes are listed in the Easy Installation Guide as:

  • 4-8GB for / (root partition); 8GB REQUIRED for LiveDVD
  • 128MB for swap
  • Whatever space left over for /home

After partitioning your disk you may need to re-load the installer, just click "Close" and go back to the main WCP screen.

  • If this is your first time installing Linux check the "Install GRUB" box as shown above - you need this to boot your new installation.
  • Make sure you select the right partitions on the left-side of the installer screen!
    • If you already have a /home partition (like from another Linux distribution), say NO when asked to format it; otherwise, say yes.
    • Read this forum post if you plan to use ReiserFS with Ultima. If in doubt, we recommend sticking with the default ext3.
  • The installation will take a while because of the amount of data being copied (over 2.5GB uncompressed!), please be patient.

Enjoy your new Linux system!

If you need to install extra packages from the CD set, reboot your computer and install them using the standard package tools (installpkg, or KPackage). See instructions.
